This striking 18th-century engraving, St. John’s Vision, was published on 14 January 1797 by Thomas Macklin’s Poets’ Gallery, Fleet Street, London. Based on an original painting by the renowned Henry Fuseli RA (1741-1825), the scene captures a moment of divine revelation experienced by St. John the Evangelist, blending Romantic intensity with visionary grandeur.
Engraved by Josiah Thompson (fl. 1780“1800), the artwork exemplifies Fuselis dramatic aesthetic, featuring an ethereal female figure draped in flowing robes, seemingly conjuring a celestial vision. The Apostle John, overwhelmed, lies in a state of awe, his outstretched arm leading the viewers eye towards a mysterious book perhaps a reference to the Book of Revelation. The fine cross-hatching technique enhances the depth and chiaroscuro, hallmarks of Fuseli’s theatrical compositions.
Framed in an elegant period frame with a title plaque.
