This engraving, based on Fuseli’s dramatic interpretation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, depicts Act II, Scene 3, where Oberon, King of the Fairies, prepares to cast a spell on the sleeping Titania using a magical flower. The mischievous Puck watches from behind, foreshadowing the ensuing chaos. The engraving captures Fuseli’s signature Romantic intensity, with striking contrasts, dynamic composition, and a supernatural atmosphere.
Provenance & Collectibility:
Originally part of Boydell’s Shakespeare Gallery, this print was produced in the late 18th century to celebrate Shakespeare’s literary legacy. Early impressions are held in major collections, including the British Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
